Psalm 139 v.11

The darkness, this thing which someone called “the night time of our fear”. It brings fear and dis-ease to our souls; it brings with it our worries and highlights our concerns. Darkness brings with it moments of suffering where our pain, whether physical, emotional, spiritual, real or imagined is sharpened; our moans and groans more pronounced. Yet for God, darkness is nothing at all! It is but a thing, insignificant and through which God can see. It is almost non-existent even as it exists. Darkness is no barrier for God, rather it is a lens through which God is able to see everything.

Psalm 139 v.11

‘If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me, and the light become night around me”, even the darkness will not be dark to you, the night will shine like day, for darkness is as light to you.”

Nothing is impossible with God! When we think we have figured God out; when we think we know God, we are surprised at how little we know and how we fall far short of even the most minute understanding. Our best thoughts and wisdom are even less than the foolishness of God, our best knowledge is almost as total ignorance compared to God’s knowledge. Our language and words are nothing but a babble of noise and a Babel of confusion; our songs are simply a cacophony of sound that cannot begin to adequately express the fullness of God’s greatness. Who is it but God for whom darkness is as light? Who is it but God who can turn darkness into light and can see through the darkness? Only God who in the midst of chaotic darkness gave the command, “Let there be light.” And there was light!

Let the light of God shine in you and through you.
